Literary Terms Eleven Catharsis: the purging of the emotions or relieving of unrestrained tensions, especially through certain kinds of art, as cataclysm or music (Catharsis). Dickens demonstrates feelings of culpability, dismay, and desolation purging from Louisa. This demonstrates and transmits a feeling of benevolence from Louisa to the readers because of the located childhood she was exposed to as well as neer having a real childhood or a apologise expression of her imagination. This effect of Catharsis shows the sense of unrighteousness and realization that strikes Mr. Gradgrind, her father, after seeing his daughter in dismay. Metonymy: a figure of speech that consists of the use of the name of one quarry or concept for that of another to which it is related, or of which it is a part, as thresholdfor sovereignty, or the bottle for strong drink, or disco biscuit over heads (or noses) for count people (Metonymy).
